GAS WELL DRILLING CONTAMINATION INCIDENTS


  • Fire
  • Illegal discharging into streams or other surface waterways or illegal taking of surface waters (from streams, Ponds, etc.)
  • Unusual activities at the drilling site, i.e. spills, runoff into fields/waterways, fumes, physical illness/reactions by humans in the area, etc
  • Changes in your water supply (quality or quantity)
  • Burglary or trespass
lf any of the above occurs at a drilling site immediately contact the following and:
  • Take a photo
  • Each truck has a square or diamond-shaped sign w/an identification number. Photograph this number or write it down. (The number indicates the type of waste being hauled by the truck')
  • If possible (safe) obtain ID numbers and company info from well storage tanks. If an emergency situation exists, you should't get near the storage tanks for your own safety. call 911
  • Ask EPA and ODNR to notify you when an inspector comes to the site
  • Ask them to test the stream and nearby soil immediately
  • Observe and, if possible, videotape the testing
  • Ask for a copy of the report as soon as it is available
  • Document, document, document!

The ODNR has an online survey you must complete soon they can determine if verbal notification is required. "If you do have to report, you will receive a list of names and contact information for the organizations that you may be required to contact. Verbal notifications are required within 30 minutes of knowledge of the release unless notification within that time frame is impractical due to uncertain circumstances."
